THE ATARIS CONCERT REVIEW . . . This review is of The Ataris show in Chicago, IL. The show was on March 30th, 2003.
![]() After a long 15 minute wait for set change, one of the radio hosts from 94.7 the Zone came on. He teased us for a few minutes, then finally left the stage for The Ataris to come on. The curtains were pulled, and the strobe lights started flashing. There was a screen behind the drummer, Chris "Kid" Knapp, that had a picture of their new CD, "So Long, Astoria", as well as the band name.
Finally, what everyone had come to see, The Ataris ran out on stage, ready to rock the place! They started by playing "I.O.U. One Galaxy". After they played their first song and everyone was pumped, they introduced themselves, and went right into "I Won't Spend Another Night Alone". Once they were finished playing that song, they asked the audience if anyone had their new CD. Everyone went wild! Once they mentioned their new CD, they went into one of the songs off of it, "Takeoffs and Landings". The band was very energetic while on stage. Mike Davenport, the band's bassist, and John Collura, the band's guitarist, were always jumping high, and just going wild. Kris Roe, the band's lead singer, jumped onto the amps, encouraging the fans to sing along, and swinging the microphone and catching it almost effortlessly. After three or four songs, they played a cover of Jawbreaker's song, "Boxcar". Up next was their current hit single, "In This Diary". Everyone went totally wild! People started moshing more, a few people got pulled out for crowd surfing, and you could feel the floor vibrating, because everyone was jumping up and down so much.
After the band played "In This Diary", they went into the song "Summer". During this song, Kris jumped on to the audience with his guitar and started to crowd surf. It was an amazing sight! Finally, after a few moments, the security guards pulled him back, and he climbed onto the stage again. After a few more songs, the band left the stage. Everyone started clapping, and chanting for the band to come back out on stage. Finally, they came back out on stage for an encore. They made sure to thank their fans for coming to the show, as well as thanking the three bands that rocked the stage before they did, Damone (damone.net), Further Seems Forever (furtherseemsforever.com), and The Juliana Theory (thejulianatheory.com).
After they played the first encore song, a huge amount of confetti went flying into the air. It was awesome! Right after the confetti, they went into playing "Teenage Riot", which many of the fans had been yelling for. Their last song of the night was "San Dimas High School Football Rules". Kris had mentioned that the band would be doing a signing after the show. Unfortunately, they never came back out. Many fans were disappointed, but there's always another show! All in all, I would say the show was amazing. The Ataris, as well as the three other bands, Damone, Further Seems Forever, and The Juliana Theory are three amazing bands. I feel that they all compliment each other very well, and the rest of the tour is going to be great! . . rewind |
