Cartel Interview
July 30th, 2006

BP: First of all, why don't you introduce yourself?
I'm Will from the band Cartel.

Can you tell us a little about the band?
Cartel started in August of 2003. We have all been best friends since college, and have been in several different bands together, and then we started Cartel. We finished up that year, went on tour in june of 2004 and released the "Ransom" EP on the Militia Group that November. We continuted to tour and released "Chroma" in September of last year, and re-released it of june of this year on Epic Records.

How has the response been?
To the re-release? Oh it's huge. It's crazy. I think we've sold three times as many CDs in two months as we originally did. We're really really happy.

What's it like to get up on stage and seeing all these fans sing along to your lyrics?
It's really really crazy. I love it. The words you wrote almost a year and half ago, and now everybody is singing the words. It's nuts. It's a new feeling every day.

You said you've been friends with these guys for a long time. What's it like touring with friends?
It's easier. We've been friends for so long that we've gotten past the big fights and blowouts and stuff. I mean you like have your litte arguments and stuff but nothing ever blows up, but even if it does, it's easy to get over it.

With Warped Tour coming to a close, what have you learned?
I've learned how to hydrate properly [laughs]. This tour is highly respectful. Nobody thinks anyone is better then anyone else. You can play at 11:30 or 7:30, and it doesn't matter how many records you've sold. I mean, everybody eats together; there's no separation really. Stacy: There's no cliques? Will: they still exist, but it's not like "headlining band" clique. Anybody can hang out. Its really cool.

What is your favorite thing about Warped Tour?
Probably just being able to see all these people at a show. Obviously we can draw better crowds in a club tour because people know you're there but I think the coolest part is seeing the new response that kids have. A lot of kids come and see us because we're on warped. It's easy to pay $30 and go see 40 bands, or however many you can fit in. But it's pretty sweet.

And the worst?
Probably the heat. That or not being clean. I'm not overly worried about being clean, like, if I go for 2 days without a shower I'm fine. But we go for 4 or 5 days with no shower, I don't like that.

You guys only play a 30 minute set each day, do you decide ahead of time, or before your set?
We play the same set every day. We decided before we left to go on tour knowing what songs we were going to play. We have a new bassist, so instead of throwing him all of the songs to learn, we decided before the tour that we were going to have him just learn a specific set of songs.

When we go on tour with New Found Glory in the fall, or our headlining tour, we will play the songs that we have to play, and we will be able to change it sometimes. But we're not a spontaneous band when it comes to stuff like that.

Do you have any tips for aspiring bands/artists?
My only tip really is to just love what you do.

Last but not least, do you have anything to say to your fans?
Thank you.
