Why don't you tell all the new fans a little about yourself.
Like just a quick thing? I'm J, I'm 17, I'm reppin Florida but I grew up near Philly. And I'm incredibly sexy. Can't leave that part out hahaha.
How long have you been singing?
Well you know, I mean, I sang since I was little. But I didn't really think about doin it for my career till I was in 8th grade or somethin like that. That's when I started recordong full songs anyway. The first song I recorded, it was an r&b joint called "Crushin' On You". Yeah, it sucked. Really bad.
Have you ever had voice/singing lessons? If so, for how long?
Naw, never really got into that. I'm more into the writing and producing side of things. I'd pay for producer lessons before I'd pay for singing lessons (I ain't had either one though). I don't really think singing lessons help much, cause I know mad peeps that think they the bomb just cause they had singing lessons for a couple years and they suck. And then I know a couple peeps who ain't never had voice lessons and they can sing like Mariah Carey and stuff.
Is there any one specific person or gorup that influenced your decision to become a singer?
I wanna do my own thing, you know? Be unique. I wanna be known for singing and producing and songwriting equally, so I guess people like Missy Elliott and Brian McKnight and stuff influenced me.
Do you have any role models?
P Diddy. Cause in ten years, I wanna have my own label too. But I needa take it one step at a time. Right now I'm workin on some new music, so I'm focusin on that. I really need to get a record deal and have a couple albums out before I start thinkin about runnin my own major label.
How would you describe your music?
Right now... right now I'm workin on some new music. My old stuff was straight up urban music, like all the other songs on the radio. But the new stuff is different. I'm workin on kinda mixin some club music like maybe techno or somethin, into the urban music. I'ma be comin out with some real original stuff soon. It's hard to explain. You'll see though, it's gonna be off the chain.
Can fans be expecting your debut CD coming out soon?
Actually right now, you know, I'm workin on that new music. So I'ma probably have a new demo done within the next month or so. After that, I needa hook up with a manager to send out the demo... you know, hook me up with a deal. Hopefully that'll be happenin in January or somethin like that. But I can't really give a date for a album just cause I don't even got a label backin me up yet. I might end up doin the underground thing if I can't find anyone who likes my music. We'll see.
If you could do a remake of any song from the past or present, what would it be, and why?
That's a good question. Shoot. I'd probably wanna remake "Tired"... the song by Willa Ford? I'd wanna do a urban remix of that, just cause I know what she's talkin about. I was signed with a major management company for a year and they did that whole manufacturing thing to me, you know? Made me all preppie. Not cool. So when I left the company, I decided I wouldn't be manufactured anymore. That's why I didn't even try out for American Idol, and I probably won't be tryin out for the second one, either. Cause that's all pop, and you know, the artist ain't gonna get creative control over their music. If I do try out, it'll be just for the experience and exposure.
And last, but not least, if you could say one thing to your fans reading this right now, what would you say?
Well you know, all the cliche stuff about how I'm glad they're my fans and for how much they support me and all. I mean, it's true, but I don't have to say it every time, cause every artist feels that way about their fans, and they know it. So instead, I'ma tell them all to go to my website and post on my forum and tell me how sexy I am and stuff. Yeah.
And thanks for doin this interview with me. You the bomb girl.
