The Format Interview - February 7th, 2004

First off, why don't you tell us a little about yourself?
Nate: I'm Nate, and I sing in The Format.
Sam: I'm Sam, and I play instruments in The Format.

Now, how about the band?
Nate: We've been a band together since we were about sixteen years old. We got tired of being in a band, but we enjoyed writing songs together and not having to deal with any genre to particularly write to, and just write songs. So we went into the studio with a local producer in Arizona and just recorded a five song EP that led to us getting signed.

If you had to describe each other in three words, what would they be?
Nate: (about Sam) Beard, arms, and I have to think about the third one..rational.
Sam (about Nate) Irrational, hair, and blazer.

How did the band get its name?
Nate: We were just throwing around names and we thought The Format fit us, because we don't really fit into one particular format as to what radio stations we're playing or people in general are listening to.

How would you describe your music?
Nate: Pop.
Sam: Yeah. Dorky pop.
Nate: What's dorky pop? Not like N'Sync pop, but more like..
Sam: Not bubblegum pop.
Nate: Yeah. Not bubblegum pop.
Stacy: Happy music?
Nate: Not necessarily happy music, it doesn't have to be happy..It's not necessarily rock..in terms of beating people up, but it doesn't necessarily make you..
Sam: Bubblegummy. [laughs a little]

How would you describe your stage show?
Nate: Like a "We Are The World" concert.
Sam: Yeah, we have a lot of people, and we try to play a lot of instruments, and it gets kind of weird sometimes. We haven't fully mastered the transfer between instruments..
Nate: One day, hopefully, we'll all have little work stations where there is a piano, bells and all that fun stuff.

What's one of your favorite songs to perform live at a show?
Nate: Career Day.
Sam: I don't know anymore. I'm not picky. I'm indifferent on that.

If you could pick any one singer/band to remake one of your songs, who would it be, what song would it be, and why?
Nate: I want to hear Neutromilk hotel do..
Sam: "Better Yet?" I don't know.
Nate: No, I want to hear Neutromilk hotel do "Tune Out."
Sam: Yeah. That's a good one.

If you weren't doing music, what do you think you'd be doing?
Nate: Not in the music industry at all?
Stacy: If you weren't in a band.
Sam: I'd probably be designing posters and flyers for people.
Nate: I would probably be working on that one Spanish deficiency that would allow me to go to a university.

Are there any bands that you think should get some recognition?
Sam: Yeah. Ruebens Accomplice.
Nate: Yeah. There's a band name Ruebens Accomplice. This band, Limbeck, we love them.
Sam: The Necronauts I like a lot. They're from Arizona. We always like to see them.
Nate: Yeah. They all deserve recognition.
Sam: Piebald needs a lot more recognition.
Nate: Yeah. Piebald needs a lot more recognition.

Last but not least, if you could give the aspiring bands/singers any tips on the music industry, what would they be, and why?
Nate: I think the main thing is to not get caught up with the music business as much as getting caught up with the music. If you spend too much time on what your shirt design should be or making sure you have a manager to get you on shows and you spend too much time paying attention to that instead of genuinely sitting down and writing music for the sole purpose of trying to get better and convey what you picture in your mind, then you're not in it for the right reasons.

Thanks for your time and good luck with your career!
